Should You Buy a Fifth Wheel or a Travel Trailer?
The RV market is vast, with many different types of RVs available. If you’re in the market for something you can tow behind your SUV or truck, then you’ll want to consider the various types of trailers, including travel trailers and fifth wheels. Each of these has its benefits and drawbacks, but this comparison should help you narrow down your choices.
Fifth Wheels
Fifth wheels are unique among towable RVs in that they have a special two-part hitch system that requires you to have a pickup truck with a bed as your towing vehicle. This is because the anchor for the hitch has to be installed in the truck bed, although many truck manufacturers do make aftermarket fifth wheel couplings for their trucks. The hitch on the fifth wheel comes up and over the rear of the truck bed to lock into place from above.
The stability of this type of hitch makes fifth wheels surprisingly easy to drive, in addition to allowing them to be much larger and more elaborate. Typically, you can find residential-style kitchen appliances, larger beds, entertainment centers, and other great amenities in a fifth wheel.
Travel Trailers
Compared to a fifth wheel, travel trailers have a simple bumper-pull hitch that connects to the rear bumper of a towing vehicle, so nearly any type of car or truck can haul them. Travel trailers tend to be smaller and simpler than fifth wheels, but they don’t offer the same types of amenities.
